New Year’s Resolutions: Did You Make Yours?

As you reflect on the past year, do you feel you made sound decisions? What would you have done differently, and how will your choices for the last year affect your resolutions for the New Year?

Intention. Motivation. Positivity. These are all important factors when considering New Year’s Resolutions. Easy to talk about and fun to make, but unless you have adequate willpower and determination, you might have a hard time going beyond the first weeks of January with your well-laid plans. When it comes to New Year’s Resolutions, here are some of the ‘usual suspects’:

Lose weight.

Many of us want to look and feel good. Making exercise a habit and keeping track of your progress by checking off the days on a calendar are both big steps to losing weight. Of course, the longer you stay on track, the easier it becomes! Make a list of why you want to lose weight, and keep it in a prominent place. When you don’t feel like heading to the gym or are about to reach for an unhealthy snack, review the list.

Stop smoking/quit drinking.

If you are a drinker, bear in mind that alcohol consumption and smoking often go hand-in-hand. Might seem like an impossibility to contemplate quitting both, but if you want to get healthy you’re not going to know how that feels when you’re still engaging in unhealthy behaviors.

Remember, start small and don’t try to be the hero. Just think of what you could treat yourself to from all that cigarette money!

Spend more time with family and friends.

We all lead busy lives. Sometimes we forget to spend time with those who matter most. Make regular plans for a lunch or dinner date with a family member or friend. You’ll start to look forward to and treasure that time.

Do something crazy.

Get outside your comfort zone. Find new experiences. Bungee jumping, sky diving, rock climbing, surfing or hiking. Just get out there and do it! Not every enlightening experience has to cost big bucks and perhaps enlist the help of your friends.

Improve your relationships.

Make a pact to enhance your partnership or friendships. Reflect on ways to help your relationships become more harmonic. How can you show your nearest and dearest you care? Remember, the little things matter. Oftentimes it’s something as simple as picking up the phone.

Enjoy life more.

Enjoying life is often thought to be a mindset, the result of reflection, action, and gratitude. Most of us lack sufficient leisure time to escape to a mountaintop temple to follow our bliss, but happiness can be found through practical, everyday changes. Make conscious choices to appreciate the people in your life and take time to do the things you’re best at and enjoy most.

Get a Promotion.

Could you start the year by taking on more responsibility in your job? If you’re intent on moving up on the corporate ladder in 2019, use your dependability, skills, and experience to remind your boss of your capabilities. Toot your own horn. Make new networking connections and learn new skills (don’t forget to add them to your resume!). Be a team player, and let your superiors see what an asset you are to their company.
