Quiz: Millennials, should you look into a career as a claims adjuster?

become a claims adjuster

Find out if you should pursue a claims adjuster job.

Are you a millennial who is looking for your next career step? Unsure where you could utilize your talents next? If that describes you than you should consider a career as a claims adjuster. Are you reading this wondering what an adjuster is and/or does? According to Wikipedia, “Claims adjusters investigate insurance claims by interviewing the claimant and witnesses, consult police and hospital records, and inspect property damage to determine the extent of the company’s liability.” Now, how does that translate into a position that a Millennial should want? Take this quiz to see if a claims adjuster job would be right for you:

1. Am I looking for career progression?
If you answered ‘yes:’
You should consider a career as an adjuster. If you were like 52% of the Millennials who said opportunities for career advancement made an employer attractive, than you’d find satisfaction as an adjuster. There are numerous roles for a claims adjuster, whether you’re in the field or at a desk. There are different types of claims you can be handling; Property or Casualty, Workers’ Compensation or Auto. Plus, you can reach new steps in the career ladder: Team Lead, Manager, Supervisor, VP. It’s truly a never-ending dream for the millennial who is looking to establish themselves and progress.

If you answered ‘no:’
Do not seek a career as an adjuster.

2. Am I interested in a career that does meaningful work?
If you answered ‘yes:’
A claims career could be a great step for you! According to a survey from UNC Kenan-Flagler, “30% of millennials seek meaningful work.” If you’re looking to help people, knowing your work is meaningful, an adjuster position may be right for you. They work with people in dire situations; a car accident, an injury at work, their house burning down or even worse. Therefore, you’re doing meaningful work by examining the situation, their loss and what will be the overall outcome.

If you answered ‘no:’
In the rules of Monopoly, ‘Do not pass Go! Do not collect $200.’ Do not become a claims adjuster.

3. Do I want training and development to be part of my role?
If you answered ‘yes:’
Then get ready to hit the books! UNC found that 22% of millennials found training and development as the most valued benefit from an employer. As an adjuster, training and development is highly encouraged throughout the industry, and sometimes even required. Therefore, there are numerous ways millennials can gain more training and development to expand their resume. For example, adding additional state licenses to their name, gaining company certificates, or learning different claims handling software (Xactimate) will put a candidate above others.

If you answered ‘no:’
Do not go back to school shopping because a career as a claims adjuster would not be the right fit for you.

4. Am I interested in flexible hours?
If you answered ‘yes:’
Start planning your long weekends accordingly! Claims positions can offer flexible hours. Many of the clients we partner with choose to run on a 9/80 (or compressed) work schedule. A 9/80 means you work 80 hours in 9 days rather than 10, so most companies have a four-day workweek twice a month. Which means more 3-day weekends than others! This means as a Millennial, you won’t have to cut back on your vacations if you accept this type of claims job.

If you answered ‘no:’
You will have plenty of time to hang out with your friends (who also didn’t choose a job as a claims adjuster) on the weekends.

If you answered ‘yes’ to 3 or more of these questions, a claims job could be the right path for you. Plus, according to the survey from UNC Kenan-Flagler, a claims adjuster job could provide you with many of the items millennials are looking for.
